According to data from Malaysia’s Department of Statistics, the country’s consumer price index rose 2.6% in March compared with the same month of 2015 following an increase of 4.2% in February. Economists’ estimates had called for an inflation rate of 3.6% in a survey by Reuters.

Higher costs for alcohol and tobacco products as well as consumer goods were cited as the main reason behind the stronger inflation rate.

Malaysia’s inflation rate is expected to slow down after the first quarter.
