According to market sources, Mexico’s Etileno XXI project, a joint venture between Brazil’s Braskem and Mexico’s Grupo Idesa, is expected to start ethylene (C2) production in November, with planned PE production beginning by the end of the year. The project located in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz state will have 1 million tons/year ethylene capacity and 1 million tons/year PE capacity.

The steam cracker within the complex will use ethane as feedstock in order to benefit from low cost shale gas in North America while it will procure it from Pemex Gas under a 20-year deal. Output from the complex will be primarily used for meeting the needs of Mexico’s PE market while the remainder is slated to be exported to the US and South America.
