More US petchem producers shut plants on Hurricane Ida

On Sunday, August 29, Hurricane Ida made landfall near Port Fourchon, Louisiana, as a Category 4 hurricane, the fifth strongest to hit the mainland. By Monday evening, Ida has weakened to a tropical depression but the US National Hurricane Center stresses that considerable flash flooding is still possible.

According to industry sources, more petrochemical hubs have been affected in the wake of Hurricane Ida’s devastating landfall. Shintech was forced to shut its 900,000 tons/year PVC plant in Addis while OxyChem shut its 613,000 tons/year EDC plant in Convent, threatening to squeeze supplies even further.

CosMar also shut its two styrene units each with 579,000 tons/year capacities in Carville while Pinnacle Polymers’ 430,000 ton/year PP plant in Garyville went offline following the hurricane. Pinnacle also announced force majeure on all products on August 30.

The industry sources reported that the widespread power outages are likely to slow the restart process for the affected facilities.
