New ban on plastics in Jilin, China

According to media reports, the government of China’s Jilin has put a ban on the production and sale of single use, non-biodegradable plastic shopping bags effective as of January 1, 2015. China has had national legislation limiting the use of plastic bags on the books since 2007, but the local measure in Jilin is reportedly being more tightly enforced.

The provincial government cited environmental issues stemming from the use of non-recyclable bags as the reason behind the new ban. Shoppers and retail outlets in the province are being encouraged to switch to bio-degradable plastics bags, which typically cost shoppers another 1-2 yuan per bag.
