According to media reports, the first road in which a plastic material was used is being tested in Cumbria, England. The new product was produced from waste plastic as a bitumen substitute so as to be used in standard asphalt mix in order to make the surface of the roads more long-lasting and to reduce the possibility of holes caused by heavy vehicles.

Having been used in private roads, the product is currently being tested on a public highway, the reports indicated, and following a 6-month monitoring period, it is likely to be used on other roads in the country and on road surface repairs if the trials prove successful.

According to media reports, other European countries as well as Australia and Uruguay have been showing their interests in the newly designed product.
