South Korea’s industrial output posted the highest level seen since March 2011 in February, according to data released by Statistics Korea. Industrial output climbed 2.6% month over month in February after declining 2% in January. The increase was attributed to stronger demand stemming from the Chinese New Year holiday and higher production in the automotive and semiconductor sectors. However, on a yearly basis, the country’s factory output declined 4.7% in February.

Industrial production in the service sector climbed 1.6% on the month in February while facility investment grew 3.6% in line with higher demand for the automotive and airline industries. The data also showed that South Korea’s machinery orders increased 1.4% in February.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s retail sales expanded 2.8% month over month in February while sales for semi-durable and non-durable goods also increased.
