According to a press release, Saudi SABIC has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Plastic Energy, a UK-based chemical recycling company, to build a plant to convert plastic waste into feedstock for the Saudi major’s crackers.

As part of the agreement, Plastic Energy will be responsible for the supply of feedstock for SABIC’s petrochemical operations in Europe.

The proposed plant is expected to refine and upgrade feedstock that will be produced from the recycling of low quality, mixed plastic waste. Located in Geleen, the Netherlands, the project is scheduled to start production in 2021.

The plant marks the first time that a petrochemical company implemented an investment project for the chemical recycling of mixed plastic waste into the original polymer, the company stated in the press release.
