According to media reports, Saudi Arabian petrochemical giant SABIC signed a deal to use US shale gas at its petrochemical plant in Teesside, the UK. The company’s chief executive reportedly stated that they signed a deal for supplying gas to the plant, but the company has not agreed with any supplier yet. No specific time was given regarding the gas supply, but it is expected to be available by the next quarter.

Previously, SABIC reported that they were considering a direct investment in the US shale sector to benefit from competitively-priced feedstocks for the production of its petrochemicals. As part of these plans, they will convert their steam cracker at the Wilton/Teesside site in the UK into a gas cracker in order to be able to use ethane coming from the US.
