Sabic to close Olefins 3 cracker at Chemelot site

As reported on the Industry & Energy website on April 10, Sabic is preparing to permanently shut down the Olefins 3 naphtha cracker, one of two at their Geleen, Netherlands site, starting from the end of this week. The producer, who will shut the cracker and five other installations at the Chemelot site for maintenance, has confirmed that the cracker will not be restarted following this turnaround period.

In the meantime, the Olefins 4 naphtha cracker will continue to operate normally. The Olefins 3 and Olefins 4 crackers have a combined production capacity of 1.25 million tons/year of ethylene and 885,000 tons/year of propylene.

Sabic has reportedly indicated that a vital aspect of its strategy for the Geleen site is the advancement of the Sabic Plastic Energy Advanced Recycling plant. This facility, aimed at chemically recycling plastics, is nearing completion.
