According to market sources, South Africa’s Sasol has broken ground on their ethane cracker and derivatives complex in Westlake, Texas. The total value of the company’s investment was reported at around $8.9 billion. The cracker is expected to be commissioned in 2018. Meanwhile, mechanical and electrical as well as instrumentation works are slated to commence in 2016 and 2017.

The new ethane cracker will have an ethylene capacity 1.5 million tons/year. The planned project will also house six chemical manufacturing plants, including a 1.98 billion lbs/year (approximately 900,000 tons/year) PE plant, spread evenly between LDPE and LLDPE, and a 660 million lbs/year (approximately 300,000 tons/year) ethylene oxide plant.
