According to market sources, several steam crackers in the Asian region are planning to switch to using LPG feedstock over the short term given stronger margins on ethylene production. China’s Secco Petrochemical plans to start using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for steam cracking as of January. The company’s plant in Shanghai is able to produce 1.1 million tons/year of ethylene and 500,000 tons/year of propylene.

In addition to Secco, Taiwan’s Formosa Petrochemical and South Korea’s Yeochun Naphtha Cracking Center also announced that they are planning to use LPG for steam cracking from January while South Korea’s Lotte Chemical is also expected to follow a similar path.
