According to a Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) released by the Singapore Institute of Purchasing and Materials Management, the country’s manufacturing activities slightly improved in October while still signaling a contraction. The October PMI increased to a reading of 48.9 from a reading of 48.6 in September. Any reading below 50 indicates a contraction.

The contraction in the manufacturing sector stemmed from weaker new export orders and slower production. Some economists commented that the slowing Chinese economy is hampering activity in nearby Singapore while hurting exports.
