According to data released by Singapore’s Department of Statistics, the country’s retail sales rose 4.6% on the year to reach SGD3.4 billion ($2.40 billion), up from SGD3.2 billion ($2.25 billion) in the same month of 2014. A 48.3% jump in motor vehicle sales was cited as the main reason behind stronger sales in September. On a monthly basis, however, Singapore’s retail sales declined 3.7%.

The data showed that supermarkets sales witnessed the second strongest performance after vehicle sales, increasing 3.9% in September from a year earlier.

However, sales in petrol service stations recorded the largest drop among all segments, declining by 22.5% from a year earlier. Retail sales for optical goods and books and food and beverage services also declined 9.9% and 2.7% on the year, respectively.
