Prolonged economic challenges, coupled with sluggish end consumption, have been reflected in Türkiye’s polyolefin imports, according to ChemOrbis Stats Wizard. During the first 11 months of the year, combined imports of homo-PP and PP copolymer totaled 2.2 million tons, marking a 4% decline compared to the same period in 2023. Total PE imports—including LDPE, LLDPE, and HDPE—dropped 5% year-over-year to 1.9 million tons.

These declines also reflected logistical hurdles that impacted trading activity, particularly during the first half of the year. However, among all products, homo-PP and LDPE defied the overall trend, posting modest gains in imports.

PP copolymers buck overall downtrend

Homo-PP

Between January and November, PPH imports fell by 5.5% year-over-year to approximately 1.7 million tons. Türkiye’s top suppliers were Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Egypt, with 658,000 tons, 277,000 tons, and 204,000 tons, respectively.

Although Saudi Arabia remained the leading supplier, its market share dropped by 2% to 37% compared to the same period in 2023. Russia also experienced a 1% decline, with its share falling to 16%. In contrast, Egypt posted a 3% increase, raising its share to 11%. This growth pushed Egypt into the third spot among top suppliers, overtaking South Korea, which held that position the previous year.

South Korea’s market share fell by 1% to 10% as PPH imports from the country slipped below 200,000 tons, moving it to the fourth spot. This decline may be partially attributed to global shipping challenges, which kept ocean container prices elevated during the first half of 2024.

PP Copolymer

PP copolymer imports increased by 5% year-over-year in the first 11 months of the year, reaching nearly 450,000 tons. Saudi Arabia (106,000 tons), South Korea (84,000 tons), and Belgium (52,000 tons) remained the top suppliers.

Saudi Arabia’s market share declined from 32% to 24%, while South Korea expanded its share from 16% to 19%. Belgium also saw a 1% increase, raising its share to 12%.

LDPE outperforms other grades, US LLDPE dethrones S. Arabia

LDPE

LDPE imports totaled 346,000 tons, reflecting a 4% year-over-year increase. Saudi Arabia remained the leading supplier with 47,000 tons between January and November, although its market share dropped by 3% to 13%.

Iran’s market share rose by 2% to 12%, as Türkiye’s LDPE imports from the country increased from 33,000 tons to 42,000 tons. Spain overtook the USA to become the third-largest supplier, with imports totaling 42,000 tons. The country’s market share surged by 6% to 12% during the period.

Meanwhile, the USA maintained a 9% market share, with sales rising from 28,000 tons to 32,000 tons, placing it as the fourth-largest supplier.

HDPE

Between January and November, HDPE imports declined by 7% to approximately 925,000 tons. Saudi Arabia (225,000 tons) and Iran (177,000 tons) remained the two largest suppliers, increasing their market shares by 3% to 24% and by 4% to 19%, respectively.

The USA overtook South Korea to become the third-largest HDPE supplier, with sales to Türkiye reaching 110,000 tons. Its market share rose from 8% to 12%, up from its position as the eighth-largest supplier during the same period in 2023.

Meanwhile, imports from South Korea plummeted by 50%, dropping from 113,000 tons in 2023 to 50,000 tons in 2024. This sharp decline pushed South Korea from the third to the fifth spot, with its market share falling from 11% to 5%.

LLDPE

Türkiye imported approximately 690,000 tons of LLDPE between January and November, marking a marginal 0.5% increase from the same period in the previous year. The USA (nearly 240,000 tons) raised its market share from 30% to 35%, overtaking Saudi Arabia as the top supplier.

Although Saudi Arabia achieved a 4% gain in market share, reaching 34% year-over-year, it ranked as the second-largest LLDPE supplier with 230,000 tons.

Iran followed, despite a drop in imports from 52,000 tons to 44,000 tons. Its market share declined by 2% to 6% during the first 11 months of the year.
