According to market sources, Taiwan’s OPTC (Oriental Petrochemical Taiwan) shut its PTA unit in Taoyuan earlier in the week due to discouraging market conditions as well as regional oversupply. The unit has a production capacity of 400,000 tons/year.

Meanwhile, players have reported that Asia’s PTA industry is facing chronic oversupply issues as capacity additions over the past few years have far outstripped demand growth. In 2015, approximately 13.1m tons/year of new capacity is expected to be added in the region.
