Trade relations at stake as Trump eyes new tariffs on China, Mexico, Canada
Trump’s proposed tariffs break the terms of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which has facilitated duty-free trade since 2020. Despite this, Trump argues that the measures are necessary to protect American jobs and bolster the economy, maintaining that tariffs shift costs to foreign nations.
China, already grappling with economic challenges such as a property market crisis and rising debt, dismissed Trump’s accusations regarding fentanyl smuggling as baseless. A Chinese embassy spokesperson stated to BBC that a trade war benefits no one and affirmed China’s commitment to cooperation.
