Trump announces ceasefire between Iran and Israel following escalation
The situation reached a critical point over the weekend when the US bombed Iran’s nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, prompting Tehran to respond with a symbolic missile barrage on a US base in Qatar. No casualties were reported, as both Qatar and the US had been warned and taken precautions. Oil markets reacted sharply, with Brent crude prices falling over 5% on Tuesday’s intraday sessions as fears of wider conflict eased.
Trump credited the ceasefire to behind-the-scenes diplomacy involving Israeli leaders, Qatari officials, and US negotiators. Iran agreed to stand down under the condition that Israel cease further strikes. Trump praised Iran’s restrained response, calling it a sign that the country had no interest in broader escalation.
While tensions remain, Trump declared the war “finished” and expressed confidence in a long-term peace, despite decades of hostility between Israel and Iran. Uncertainty persists around Iran’s nuclear stockpile, which remains unaccounted for following the US strikes. Still, officials in Washington believe the threat of an Iranian nuclear weapon has been severely diminished, for now.
