According to media reports, a RO-RO (roll on/roll off) agreement between Egypt and Turkey will expire on April 22, 2015 while Egypt reported that they may not renew the agreement, which is causing some panic on the Turkish side. Turkey’s International Transportation Association (UND) stated that the Suez Canal or Iran can be an option for Turkish traders in case of any disagreement.

The UND stated that they are focusing on two solutions. One of involves transportation through the Suez Canal, which suggests the application of a new RO-RO type agreement, but removes the necessity of passing within Egypt’s territory.

The other solution calls for a new route over Iran which is said to decrease costs by around 50%. The UND reported that Turkey has many agreements with Iran on transit passes, which remove the charge of extra fees. Therefore, Turkish materials can be transported to Middle Eastern Gulf countries via Iran’s Bushehr port with very competitive prices, according to the UND.
