Turkey to restrict use of plastic bags
by ChemOrbis Editorial Team - content@chemorbis.com
According to the Chairman of the Turkish Federation of Shopping Centers and Retailers, the use of plastic bags will be restricted in Turkey as of January 1, 2018 in scope of the waste legislation performed by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. The decision will be applied by getting extra charge for each bag to be used.
Sector representatives argue that it will not be easy for the firms to adapt to the new situation and it might result in bankruptcy for some if they are not careful about their financial structures.
The President of Turkish Plastics Industry Foundation (PAGEV) said that the new decision might result in a lower capacity utilization and reduced employment. He argued that the firms which will continue to manufacture the restricted products will possibly focus on exports while demand for biodegradable bags will increase for the local market.
