UK government to evaluate Plastic Packaging Tax

According to a press release on its website on December 14, the UK government has announced the evaluation of the Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) that was introduced on April 1, 2022. The decision reflects the UK’s willingness to reduce plastic waste and support the government’s waste reduction targets.

With this evaluation, the government aims to adopt more circular practices by using recycled plastic in the manufacturing of plastic packaging. Currently, the tax applies to plastic packaging manufactured or imported into the UK which does not contain at least 30% recycled plastic and is taxed at £210.82 per ton.

Under the scope of the government’s Resources and Waste Strategy, the Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) was assessed to “provide a better understanding of both the effect on businesses who are liable for or impacted by the tax.” The idea of an evaluation was first proposed in April 2023.

The government has also announced that it will continue to assess the development and impact of the tax to provide an up-to-date evaluation.
