According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), industrial production in the UK declined 0.2% month over month in December, partly due to extended maintenance works on North Sea oil and gas fields as well as lower mining and quarrying output.

On a yearly basis, the country’s industrial output climbed 1.7% while mining and quarrying output decreased 1.4% in December.

However, the manufacturing sector expanded by 0.1% to beat economists’ initial estimates, which called for a decrease of 0.1% in December. The increase was attributed to higher production for computer products, aerospace equipment and food products.
