New car registrations in the UK posted their highest level for the 21st century in March, according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The UK’s new car sales have been growing for three consecutive years.

The country’s new car registrations increased 6% year over year in March to reach 492,774 vehicles, the highest monthly figure since August 1998. The increase was attributed to low interest rates and the emergence of new fuel-efficient models. The SMMT also reported that March is normally a high season for new car sales as this is the month when new number plates are released.
