According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), UK retail sales fell at a faster pace than expected in January. The country’s retail sales declined 0.3% month over month in January to post the first decrease in four months. Economists’ initial estimates called for a decrease of 0.2% in January. The decrease was mainly attributed to lower sales in food stores, textile and clothing.

On a yearly basis, the retail sales increased 5.4% in January from 4% in the preceding month while they fell below economists’ estimates calling for an increase of 5.9%. The country’s retail sales excluding auto fuel climbed 4.8% in January compared with the same period of the previous year.
