According to data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), retail sales in the UK posted a slight increase of 0.1% on the month in July following a decrease of 0.1% in June. However, retail sales excluding auto fuel sales rose 0.4% from a month earlier in July, in line with economists’ expectations, after decreasing by 0.3% in the previous month.

The data revealed that retail sales in food stores dropped 0.2% while non-food store sales rose 0.7% in July.

On a yearly basis, meanwhile, UK retail sales including fuel rose 4.2% in July. Economists’ initial estimates had called for a gain of 4.4%. The country’s July yearly retail sales increased on the year for the 28th consecutive month.
