US factory orders continue to fall in January

According to data released by the US Commerce Department, new factory orders posted a sixth consecutive decrease in January. Factory orders decreased 0.2% in January after declining 3.5% in December. Economists’ initial estimates called for an increase of 0.2% in January.

The decrease was attributed to weakening demand from Europe and Asia as well as a stronger dollar. Meanwhile, plunging crude prices also weighed down on manufacturing as they have resulted in reduced capital expenditures on the part of oil and gas companies.
