A measure of US manufacturing activity slightly improved in September, according to data reported by Markit Economics. However, September’s manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) still represented the country’s second-lowest level since October 2013. Markit’s PMI rose to a reading of 53.1 in September following a reading of 53 in the previous month. The latest figure also indicated a slight increase compared with the institution’s preliminary reading of 53 for September. Any reading above 50 signifies an expansion.

In spite of the fact that US manufacturing activities showed some improvement in September, the country is still facing some economic headwinds, including a stronger dollar and weak global demand stemming from the slow recovery in the global economy as well as the persistent deceleration in China. According to Markit, the US manufacturing sector showed its worst performance for two years during the third quarter.
