US manufacturing activity slowed in July, according to data reported by the Institute of Supply Management (ISM). The Institute’s manufacturing index fell to a reading of 52.7 in July from June’s reading of 53.5. Any reading above 50 indicates expansion. ISM’s latest reading for July also missed initial estimates, which called for a reading of 53.5 in a survey by Reuters.

An index of new orders increased to a reading of 56.5 from 56.0 in June to post the highest reading since last December while an import index sank to its lowest reading in the past year at 52. Meanwhile, the employment index declined to a reading of 52.7 after posting a reading of 55.5 in the previous month.
