US retail sales fall in May

According to the US Commerce Department, overall retail sales in the US decreased by 0.3% in May on a monthly basis after a rise of 0.3% in April and missed the market expectations which were calling for a rise of 0.1%. On a yearly basis, however, the retail sales were up by 3.8% in May.

The decline in the country’s retail sales in May was mainly led by drops of 2.8% and 2.4% in sales of electronic appliance stores and of gasoline stations respectively. Sales of motor vehicle and parts were also down by 0.2% while food and beverage sales dropped slightly by 0.1%.
