US retail sales slightly up in Feb

According to the US Commerce Department, overall retail sales in the US slightly increased by 0.1% in February after they were up by 0.6% in January. The increase matched the market expectations which called for an increase of 0.1%. The retail sales were also up by 5.7% in February on a yearly basis.

The rise in the country’s retail sales in January was driven by an increase of 1.8% in building materials as well as the rise in sales by non-store retailers by 1.2%.

The data showed that retail sales in February were up despite the drop in auto sales by 0.2% after decreasing by 1.3% in January. Excluding the slight pullback in auto sales, retail sales increased by 0.2% in February.
