US sets tariff rates on 69 countries, effective August 7
The White House said the measures aim to address a “national emergency” tied to the lack of reciprocity in US trade relationships. Countries with which the US runs trade surpluses face a baseline 10% tariff, while those with deficits face 15% or higher. India will face a 25% tariff, Malaysia 19%, and Türkiye 15%.
The tariffs also create a short window for negotiation. Analysts note that countries facing 15% or higher duties have until August 7 to secure deals and avoid implementation. Trump has already reached tariff agreements with the EU, Japan, South Korea, and several Southeast Asian nations, while Mexico and China remain under review. China could face 30% tariffs if talks fail by August 12, while Mexico secured a 90‑day extension amid ongoing dialogue.
Trade policy experts say the latest measures highlight Trump’s continued reliance on unilateral trade actions to pressure partners into agreements. The administration also plans to tighten rules on transshipped goods, which could further affect global trade flows in the coming weeks.
