Stats: China’s PP exports outpace imports for 3rd month amid capacity boom

  • 23/06/2025 (09:11)
China further strengthened its presence in the global PP market in May 2025, as exports exceeded imports for the third consecutive month. Robust export performance and declining import needs have cemented the country’s role as a net exporter, reflecting the influence of rapid capacity growth and shifting trade flows.
According to ChemOrbis Supply Wizard, China added 3.15 million tons/year of new PP capacity in the first five months of 2025 alone. With an additional 4.6 million tons/year expected by the end of the year, the supply glut is likely to intensify, further fueling export volumes while dampening the need for imports.

Exports continue climbing on yearly and monthly basis

China’s PP exports surpassed 300,000 tons in May, up by 8% from April and soaring nearly 40% year-on-year. This marked one of the strongest monthly export performances in recent history, reflecting competitive pricing and ample domestic supply.

Imports drop to 15-month low

Imports were slightly above 250,000 tons in May, marking the lowest level since February 2024. On a yearly basis, volumes fell 15%, highlighting the growing self-sufficiency of China’s downstream industries and rising substitution of imports with locally produced material.

China maintains positive trade balance

In terms of value, May exports generated around $323,000, exceeding the $286,000 spent on imports. This positive trade balance not only reflects stronger volumes but also improved value-added positioning in China’s PP export structure.

Regional trade patterns hold largely steady

South Korea was the leading supplier of PP to China, followed by Singapore. On the export front, Vietnam retained its position as the top destination for Chinese-origin PP, signaling stable regional trade routes and consistent demand from Southeast Asia.
