Brief History

With its solid and consistent background in the engineering plastics market, Tekno Polimer is one of the leading companies in the compounding sector in Turkey. Tekno Polimer started its business with a 350 ton capacity extruder in 1985, and with the great demand from the market for its products, it increased its capacity to 18,000 tons through quick investments. Tekno Polimer is now one of the few independent compounding companies in Europe.

The company, aiming at being a leader both in terms of technology and quality, established its Quality Control and Product Development Laboratory in 1987. Just after the establishment of its laboratory, it achieved an export volume of 23 tons that year. Tekno Polimer is currently exporting 50% of its annual production.

Tekno Polimer's machinery consists of 7 extruders. The company also has a laboratory extruder with a twin gimlet which is used as a pilot production line by the R&D department.

Tekno Polimer has grown into a group of companies with its Tekno Ticaret Corp. providing import opportunities from the free zone within the Atatürk Airport, and Polimeks Corp. for domestic sales after 1997. In 2000, the company sold 87% of its stakes to American MA.HANNA and in June 2000 it established a merger with MA.HANNA GEON and changed its name to PolyOne Corporation.

As the leader in the engineering plastics industry in Turkey, Tekno Polimer with its experienced staff, is making great contributions to product development, product standardization and customer services to improve the domestic market. As well as continuing to develop its own technology, it also co-operates with the leading companies in the world and transfers innovations from the latest developments in the industry to its business.

  • 30% PP homo-polymer, co-polymer polypropylene compounds
  • 15% PBT, PET and other materials

Supply Sources

Tekno Polimer buys PP co-polymer mainly from Europe and homo-polymer PP from Petkim and Europe. The company says that for other materials they make purchases from various sources.

Expansion Plans

Tekno Polimer has focused greatly on exports since 1999. Increasing its export volume by 445% between 1999-2000, it built its expansion plans on its export activities. The domestic market accounts for 50% of the company's production and 50% of it is exported. Countries such as England, France, Spain, and Germany in Western Europe import 85% of Tekno Polimer's export products, and the rest is exported to the Middle East and North Africa. Tekno Polimer executes most of its export to Europe via PolyOne companies based in various countries in the region. These include, Bergmann in Germany, Polibasa in Spain, SoFTer in Italy, Melos in Germany, and Wilson in England, Belgium and France.

Also, in the domestic market, Tekno Polimer targets an increased share in the automotive sector in Turkey, which is expected to grow larger as Turkey in the near term becomes a center of production in this industry in the region.

Running its business in accordance with ISO 9002 Quality System and with a focus both on customer satisfaction and R&D, Tekno Polimer supports its high quality production with 10 professionals including two chemical engineers, two chemical technicians working in quality control and R&D departments and one production line, two injection machines, and a complete set of lab equipment.

Market Conditions

The company thinks there won't be a great change in domestic demand until 2003 and the market will continue to suffer the consequences of the crisis. So, as they try to keep their share of the domestic market they will focus mainly on export activities. They are working on projects to increase their share to maximum levels in the European and Middle East markets. They are aiming at increasing their exports by 10% per year and become stronger in the global market while growing at home at a faster pace than the market itself.

ChemOrbis/Internet Strategy

Being aware of the fact that commercial activities are being conducted increasingly online, Tekno Polimer, as a partner of PolyOne, is targeting to actively use the opportunities provided by the Internet soon. They say that as PolyOne has a plan to establish a worldwide network that will connect all of its partners online, they are thinking of creating an IT department.

Tekno Polimer thinks ChemOrbis is providing them with the most practical and fastest tool to reach market information. They note that they really make use of the information and market reports from the ChemOrbis site and add that they think ChemOrbis is a first in the sector providing an important service for the industry.
